Cooking Classes

Paon Bali

Set in a quiet and idyllic setting in the village of Laplapan, just to the northeast of Ubud, Paon Bali (Paon, meaning kitchen) offers visitors the chance to embark on a culinary adventure discovering the secrets of authentic Balinese cuisine. Utilising traditional ingredients and preparation methods, Paon Bali offers an educational day of exploration that pulls back the curtain and gives visitors a deeper understanding of traditional Balinese life.

However before you can begin any food preparation a visit the local village market is in order. Although Bali is modernising at a frantic pace, the traditional Balinese market is just that, traditional. Not much has changed over the years and the best time to visit is in the morning. And so your day starts bright and early at the Ubud markets, where Paon Bali will guide you around and teach about herbs and spices, which vendor has the freshest vegetable and choicest cuts of meat. After leaving the market you’ll head off on a guided rice padi tour to learn (depending on the season) communal nature of the padi from its planting to harvesting.

Upon your return to Laplapan village, you will be warmly welcomed and expertly guided by your host, Puspa, who will  help you to discover just how to create your very own delicious authentic Balinese dishes in a fully equipped community village kitchen. Fish, prawns, squid or sates are grilled over coconut husks. Meats braised in sweet soy or coconut milk, and ducks and chickens roasted in banana leaves. And at the end of each class you’ll enjoy not only a delicious meal and the satisfaction that comes from preparing it but also the company of new found friends and the warm hospitality of your hosts, Puspa and Wayan. Some of the dishes you will be learn to prepare are below. (Note: due to seasonality and market conditions menu may change).
