Batuan Village

Painting, dancing & stone carving

The village of Batuan is an important village and famous for three items, one, it’s painting style; two, the Gambuh dance (performed only at Full Moon Festivals) and three, Pura Puseh. On this tour you’ll get an understanding of the Batuan painting style and how it relates to Pura Puseh. Developed in the 1930s and easily recognizable by the emphasis on sombre colours, generally in black and dark blues, and dominated with very detailed mystic Balinese religious characters connected to the underworld. The detail exhibited in Batuan’s painting style is also on display at Pura Puseh, an ancient temple dating back to the 11th century and, known for its very elaborate and beautiful stone carvings.
